On Mac OS X, I use Spotlight to launch applications and files quickly. When I migrated back to Ubuntu, I use Tracker with the Desktop Applet. On my Ubuntu netbook, I use Gnome-Do since resources are limited (don't want Tracker scanning system).

I just discovered Synapse, which I think works better than Gnome-Do (still testing).

To install it on Ubuntu 10.10:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:synapse-core/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install synapse
